چکیده

We outline existence of the Brenier map. As an application we present simple proofs of the multiplicative form of the Brunn–Minkowski inequality and the Marton–Talagrand inequality. 1.

An Elementary Introduction to Monotone Transportation

Monge gave a number of examples to illustrate the difficulties of the problem. Plainly if arbitrary measures are allowed it may not be possible to transport at all. If μ is a single point mass and ν consists of two point masses, each with weight 1/2, then no map T can “split μ in half”. Where transportation maps do exist, there may be many different optimal ones, even for measures on the line. ...

Introduction. These lectures will focus on those properties of maximal monotone operators which are valid in arbitrary real Banach spaces. Most applications (to nonlinear partial differential equations, optimization, calculus of variations, etc.) take place in reflexive spaces, in part because several key properties have only been shown to hold in such spaces. (See, for instance, [De], [Pa–Sb] ...

Semi-abelian categories, torsion theories and factorisation systems

Semi-abelian categories [5] provide a suitable axiomatic context to study, among other things, the (co)homology of non-abelian algebraic structures (such as groups, compact groups, crossed modules, commutative rings, and Lie algebras), torsion and radical theories, and commutator theory. In this talk a brief introduction to some elementary properties of these categories will be given, before fo...

Period Two Implies All Periods for a Class of Odes: a Multivalued Map Approach

We present an elementary proof that, for a multivalued map φ : R R with nonempty connected values and monotone margins, the existence of a periodic orbit of any order k > 1 implies the existence of periodic orbits of all orders. This generalizes a very recent result of this type in terms of scalar ordinary differential equations without uniqueness, due to F. Obersnel and P. Omari, obtained by m...

Commutative C ∗-algebras and Σ-normal Morphisms

We prove in an elementary fashion that the image of a commutative monotone σ-complete C-algebra under a σ-normal morphism is again monotone σ-complete and give an application of this result in spectral theory.
